Gold IRA Company Reviews (2026)

LAST UPDATED: JUNE 23, 2026 BY MARCUS HALLORAN, PRECIOUS METALS IRA ANALYST REVIEWED BY DANA REYES, CFP

Most gold IRA "reviews" are advertisements in disguise. Ours are not. We tested each company below against the same four-part rubric (fees, custody, service, and reputation), read live fee schedules, confirmed depository arrangements, and graded how plainly each firm explains the one cost that matters most: the dealer markup over the spot price. Below are the ten companies that cleared our bar for 2026, each ranked, scored, and summarized in a sentence.

How we review each gold IRA company

Every company on this page is scored against one fixed rubric, applied the same way to each provider, so the ratings are comparable rather than impressionistic. The four pillars and their weights are public, and you can read the full data we collect on our How We Rank page. Affiliate compensation does not change a score; partner links are marked rel="sponsored" and live separately from our editorial judgment.

  • Fees and pricing transparency (30%): setup, annual, and storage costs, plus how openly a firm discloses its markup over the spot price.
  • Custody and storage (25%): use of IRS-approved depositories, segregated versus commingled options, and full insurance.
  • Service and buyback (25%): rollover support, specialist access, and whether there is a firm, written buyback commitment.
  • Reputation (20%): BBB standing, independent review history, complaint patterns, and years in business.

The cost most reviews hide: dealer markup over spot

A gold IRA's annual fees are easy to find. The bigger expense is usually invisible: the dealer markup, or spread, between the spot price of metal and the price you actually pay. On common bullion this might be a few percent; on "exclusive" or proof coins it can run far higher and is much harder to recover when you sell. We weight pricing transparency at 30 percent precisely because a low storage fee means little if the spread on your coins quietly erases years of returns. Ask any company for its buy price and its current buyback price on the same product, then compare the gap.

Ignore the "home storage" gold IRA pitch

If a salesperson tells you that you can keep IRA gold in a safe at home, walk away. Internal Revenue Code section 408(m)(3) defines the limited bullion and coins an IRA may hold, and the metal must sit with an IRS-approved trustee or depository, not in your house. The IRS has treated personal possession of IRA metals as a taxable distribution. "Home storage IRA" and "checkbook LLC" schemes can trigger taxes and penalties, and none of the companies we rank rely on that pitch.

Who should think twice about a gold IRA

A gold IRA is not for everyone. Because physical metal pays no dividend or interest, and because spreads and storage create a cost drag, it suits investors who already hold diversified retirement assets and want a smaller allocation as a hedge. If you have not captured your full employer match, you are carrying high-interest debt, your time horizon is very short, or you would be moving most of your savings into a single asset class, the math rarely favors a gold IRA. Treat it as insurance on a portfolio, not the portfolio itself. Not sure where you land? Our free comparison kit lays out the trade-offs in plain English.

Fee figures throughout this page were verified in June 2026 and are approximate; promotions and schedules change, so confirm current pricing directly with each company before you open an account.

Questions about our reviews

How does Gold IRA Consulting review gold IRA companies?

We score every company against a fixed, four-part rubric: fees and pricing transparency (30%), custody and storage (25%), service and buyback terms (25%), and reputation (20%). For each provider we read the current fee schedule, confirm which IRS-approved depositories it uses, test how clearly a representative explains the dealer markup over spot, and cross-check complaint and review histories. Scores are editorial and independent of any commission we may earn. The full weighting and the data we collect are published on our How We Rank page.

Which gold IRA company is rated highest?

Augusta Precious Metals tops our 2026 list with a 9.6/10 (4.8/5) editorial score. It earns the spot for one-on-one education sessions, a never-declined buyback commitment, segregated storage at the Delaware Depository, and qualifying accounts that can have custodian and storage fees waived for up to ten years. Its roughly $50,000 minimum is higher than most, so lower-balance investors may prefer American Hartford Gold or Orion Metal Exchange. Fees verified June 2026; confirm current pricing.

Are gold IRA reviews online trustworthy?

Treat them carefully. Many gold IRA reviews are thinly disguised advertisements that bury the affiliate relationship and never mention the dealer markup over spot, which is usually the largest cost you will pay. Look for sites that disclose compensation clearly (we mark partner links rel="sponsored"), publish a written methodology, cite primary sources such as IRS Publication 590-A and IRC 408(m), and warn you about red flags like "home storage" gold IRA schemes. A trustworthy review tells you who a company is wrong for, not only who it is right for.
