Who Patriot Gold Group is best for

Patriot Gold Group is the trading name of Halt Gold Group, LLC, a dealer-direct precious-metals firm selling gold and silver for cash purchase and for self-directed IRAs. Its distinguishing feature is a No Fee For Life structure on qualifying accounts, and its whole proposition stands or falls on whether you qualify for it.

Patriot fits a committed rollover investor funding a larger account, realistically around $100,000 or more, who intends to hold for many years. Over a twenty-year horizon, having recurring custodian and storage costs covered is worth several thousand dollars, and that is a genuine advantage rather than a marketing flourish.

It fits poorly if your balance will not reach the qualifying threshold, because then you are paying ordinary fees at a firm that scores below several competitors on our other pillars. We rank it tenth of ten in our 2026 rankings, which reflects a sound offering with real caveats rather than a bad one.

No Fee For Life, in plain English

Offers like this get repeated across the internet without anyone explaining the mechanics, so here they are.

In a gold IRA, two recurring bills come from third parties, not from the dealer: an annual custodian or administration fee for maintaining the account, and an annual storage and insurance fee charged by the depository holding your metal. Together these typically run $175 to $300 a year across the providers we cover. No Fee For Life means Patriot absorbs those two charges for as long as you hold the account, on accounts that meet a qualifying funding level. The threshold is commonly reported at around $100,000, and a setup charge of roughly $225 is generally waived when you meet the initial minimum.

Now the part that matters more. It does not mean the account is free. The dealer's own income comes from the markup over the live spot price when you buy the metal, and that markup is not waived by any fee promotion at any company. On a $100,000 purchase, a difference of three percentage points in markup is $3,000, which is roughly fifteen years of the annual fees you were just excused from paying. A fee waiver funded by a wider spread is not a saving, it is a relabelling.

So before you treat the waiver as the deciding factor, ask four questions and get the answers in writing: what exact funding level qualifies, whether the waiver survives if the balance later falls below that level, whether it covers both the custodian and the depository or only one, and what the total purchase price is as a percentage over spot. Then compare that percentage against another dealer quoting the same products on the same day. Our gold IRA fees guide and fee calculator will let you model it properly.

For an account that does not qualify, Patriot is commonly reported at roughly $375 in estimated first-year costs, which is at the higher end of our field. (Verified July 2026.)

The minimum investment figures do not agree

We are flagging this because it materially affects whether Patriot is even available to you, and because published sources genuinely conflict.

Our own dataset lists Patriot's gold IRA minimum at approximately $25,000, and that is the figure carried in our rankings table. Money reported a $50,000 minimum for a gold IRA in its review of the company, alongside $10,000 for a straightforward cash purchase. Other published reviews cite $25,000. Patriot does not display a single prominent figure on its site.

All of these can be true at different times or for different products. Minimums move with promotions, and the number for a cash purchase is not the number for a retirement account. But the practical consequence is simple: do not plan around any published minimum, including ours. Ask what applies to your specific account, this month, and hold the answer against what you are later told. A firm that gives you a different number on the phone than the one you were shown is telling you something useful about how it operates. See our guide to gold IRA minimum investments for how the thresholds compare across the field.

Reputation: strong ratings, and a named criticism

Patriot's third-party record splits in a way that is worth reading in full rather than in headline.

The ratings

As of July 2026, the Better Business Bureau lists Patriot Gold Group with an A+ rating, accredited since 2022, and the profile carries a notably low complaint volume, reported at zero complaints closed over a three-year window. A clean complaint record is a genuine positive signal and we count it as one. We also found no CFTC or SEC enforcement action against Patriot Gold Group or Halt Gold Group, LLC in the federal enforcement records we searched in July 2026.

The criticism

Against that, a named publisher has made a specific editorial judgment about the company's marketing. In its Best Gold IRA Companies ranking dated 9 July 2026, Money states plainly: "Patriot Gold Group is not on our main list because it employs scare tactics to sell precious metals." Money also notes limited customer review volume and a weaker Business Consumer Alliance grade relative to the firms it does list.

We report that as Money's assessment, attributed to Money. It is not our finding, and it is not a regulatory determination. But it is a sourced, on-the-record judgment by an established publisher, and a reader deciding where to move retirement savings deserves to know that a mainstream outlet declined to rank this company for that stated reason.

The practical version for you is behavioral rather than reputational. Urgency-driven selling is the most common pressure tactic in this industry, and it works on people who are already anxious about their savings. If any representative at any firm tells you a window is closing, that a currency collapse is imminent, or that you must decide today, that is the moment to end the call and take a week. A sound long-term allocation decision is never damaged by waiting seven days. Our guide to gold IRA scams and red flags lists the rest of the warning signs.

The competitor litigation

For completeness, because it is public and because we report it on the other side too: in August 2021, a competitor, Orion Precious Metals, Inc., filed a civil suit in Los Angeles County Superior Court naming Halt Gold Group, LLC doing business as Patriot Gold Group among the defendants (case no. 21STCV30610). Orion pleaded false advertising and unfair competition under California Business and Professions Code sections 17500 and 17200, centering on an allegation that the defendants advertised having been in business since 1986 when Orion said they had not been.

Three points of precision. First, these are allegations by a commercial competitor and they are unproven. Second, in September 2023 the court denied the defendants' motion for summary judgment on most causes of action and granted summary adjudication on one; a denial of summary judgment is a procedural ruling that facts remain in dispute for trial, not a finding that anyone did anything wrong. Third, this is a private business dispute between two dealers, not a consumer-protection action and not a regulatory proceeding. We mention it because it is on the public docket and because omitting it while covering it on our Orion Metal Exchange review would be inconsistent, not because it should carry much weight in a purchasing decision.

Storage and custodians

Patriot does not hold client IRA metals itself. Accounts are administered by third-party, IRS-approved custodians and metal is held in insured, IRS-approved depositories, which is the compliant structure and the only one you should accept. Segregated and non-segregated storage are generally available, with segregated costing more because your specific items are kept apart rather than pooled.

Home storage is not offered. It should not be, by anyone. Taking personal possession of IRA metals is treated by the IRS as a distribution, and the United States Tax Court shut down the checkbook-control version of the idea in McNulty v. Commissioner in 2021. See gold IRA storage, the home storage myth, and IRA approved gold for which products actually qualify.

Buyback, service and the dealer-direct model

Patriot sells dealer-direct, meaning it is the counterparty rather than a broker routing your order elsewhere. In principle that removes a layer of margin. In practice it makes the markup question more important rather than less, because there is no second party whose pricing you can compare inside the same transaction. Ask for the price as a percentage over spot and compare externally.

The firm operates a buyback program and will quote to repurchase metals. As at every dealer we cover, that is a commercial practice rather than a contractual price guarantee, and what you receive depends on the spread quoted on the day. Ask what the typical repurchase spread has been before you buy. If you want the most documented buyback commitment in our rankings, that is Augusta Precious Metals.

The account itself opens the same way it does everywhere. You establish a self-directed IRA with a third-party custodian, fund it by transferring from an existing IRA or rolling over from a 401(k), 403(b) or TSP, then instruct the purchase of metals that meet the IRS fineness standards. Metal ships from the dealer straight to the depository and never passes through your hands, because taking possession would be a distribution. A trustee-to-trustee transfer is the mechanism to ask for: it sidesteps the 60-day deadline and the once-per-year limit that apply to indirect rollovers. Our gold IRA rollover guide and how a gold IRA works set out each step in order.

One practical note specific to a fee-waiver offer. Because the waiver is tied to a funding threshold, there is a natural incentive for a conversation to steer you toward funding at or above that level. That is not improper in itself, and a larger balance genuinely does carry fees better. But the right size for your metals allocation is a function of your overall retirement plan, not of a promotional threshold. Decide the allocation first, then see which offers you qualify for. Reversing that order is how people end up overweight in a single asset class.

The honest cons

The waiver threshold is the practical one. A promotion aimed at $100,000-plus accounts is not a benefit for a $25,000 buyer, and the marketing does not always make that distinction obvious. The conflicting minimums are the second: a company that is hard to pin to a number before you call is a company you should pin to a number in writing. Money's published criticism of the sales approach is the third, and it is the reason Patriot's reputation pillar scores 7.3, the lowest sub-score across these three reviews, despite the excellent BBB record.

Review volume is thinner than at the larger firms, which cuts both ways: fewer complaints, but also a smaller sample from which to judge consistency. And the underlying product is not universally suitable. Metals pay no dividend or interest, returns depend entirely on price movement, and for most people a sensible allocation is a slice of a diversified retirement plan rather than the plan itself. Read the pros and cons before choosing any provider.

// FINAL VERDICT · 8.1/10

A real fee advantage for large, long-hold accounts. Read the qualifying terms before anything else.

Patriot Gold Group, trading as Halt Gold Group, LLC, holds an A+ BBB rating with accreditation since 2022 and a very low complaint volume, and we found no federal enforcement action against it. On a qualifying account, commonly reported at around $100,000, having custodian and storage fees covered for the life of the account is worth real money over a long horizon.

The caveats are equally real. Published minimums conflict between sources, the waiver is out of reach for most buyers, and Money excluded the company from its main ranking in July 2026 on the stated basis that it employs scare tactics. Get the qualifying threshold and the markup over spot in writing, and never let urgency decide a retirement allocation.

Patriot Gold Group FAQ

Is Patriot Gold Group legit?

Patriot Gold Group is the trading name of Halt Gold Group, LLC, a dealer-direct precious-metals firm that the Better Business Bureau lists with an A+ rating, accredited since 2022, verified July 2026. It uses third-party IRS-approved custodians and insured depository storage rather than holding client metals itself. We found no CFTC or SEC enforcement action against the company in the public records we searched in July 2026. Money has criticized its marketing, and it is a defendant in an unresolved civil suit brought by a competitor, so read both alongside the ratings.

How does Patriot Gold Group No Fee For Life actually work?

No Fee For Life means Patriot covers the custodian and storage fees a third party would otherwise bill you each year, for as long as you hold the account, on accounts that meet a qualifying funding level commonly reported at around $100,000. It does not mean the account is free. You still pay the dealer markup over the spot price when you buy metals, and that markup is where the cost sits. Waivers can also be tied to keeping the account above the qualifying threshold. Get the qualifying figure, the term and any clawback conditions in writing before you fund.

What is the minimum investment for Patriot Gold Group?

Sources disagree, and you should know that before you plan. Our dataset lists approximately $25,000 for a gold IRA. Money reported a $50,000 minimum for a gold IRA and $10,000 for a straightforward cash purchase in its review. Patriot does not publish a single figure prominently, and minimums can differ by product and by promotion. Ask for the number that applies to your specific account before you rely on any published figure, including ours. Verified July 2026.

What are Patriot Gold Group fees?

Patriot is commonly reported at roughly $375 in estimated first-year costs for an account that does not qualify for the waiver, covering setup plus annual custodian and storage charges. Accounts that meet the qualifying funding level can have those recurring third-party fees covered under the No Fee For Life structure. The separate dealer markup over spot on the metals themselves is not waived and is usually the largest single cost. Verified July 2026; confirm the current schedule in writing.

Who is Patriot Gold Group best for?

Patriot suits a committed rollover investor funding a larger account, roughly $100,000 or more, who will hold for many years and wants recurring custodian and storage fees covered for the life of the account. The math only works over a long horizon. It is a weaker fit for smaller balances that will not qualify for the waiver, for anyone who wants published pricing they can read without a phone call, or for anyone uncomfortable with urgency-driven marketing.
