Orion Metal Exchange Review (2026)

The lowest account minimum on our list, a flat annual fee, and a public record that is widely misread online. We went through the fees, the ratings, and the actual court filings to separate what is documented from what is noise.

Who Orion Metal Exchange is best for

Orion Metal Exchange is the trading name of Orion Precious Metals, Inc., a Los Angeles based dealer selling gold and silver for both direct delivery and self-directed retirement accounts. Its position in our rankings comes down to one number: an account minimum of roughly $5,000, the lowest of the ten companies we cover.

That matters more than it sounds. Gold IRA costs are largely fixed. A custodian charges roughly the same to administer a $6,000 account as a $60,000 one, and a depository charges roughly the same to store a small bar as a large one. On a $50,000 balance, a $190 annual bill is under 0.4 percent. On a $6,000 balance, that same $190 is over 3 percent a year, before you have paid a cent of dealer markup. Orion is the right door for someone opening a modest position, provided they go in with clear eyes about what fixed fees do to a small account.

It is a weaker fit if you want to read a full fee schedule before you speak to anyone, if you want a deep research library, or if the longest possible operating history is what reassures you. On those points, other providers in our 2026 rankings do more.

Fees and minimums

Every gold IRA carries three recurring costs plus one that never appears on a fee schedule. The three are a one-time account setup fee, an annual custodian or administration fee, and an annual storage and insurance fee charged by the depository. The fourth is the dealer markup over spot, and it is usually the biggest of the four.

Orion is commonly reported to charge no account setup fee and no transfer fee of its own, with a custodian setup charge of roughly $50 and a flat annual cost of roughly $190 that covers accounts up to about $500,000. A flat structure with a ceiling that high is genuinely useful, because it means a growing balance does not drag a growing fee behind it.

One honest caveat belongs here. When we checked Orion's website in July 2026, the company did not publish a fee schedule or a minimum investment figure anywhere on its gold IRA pages. Visitors are directed to call. That is common in this industry and it is not evidence of anything improper, but it does mean the numbers above are reported figures rather than published ones, and it is the main reason Orion does not score higher on our pricing-transparency pillar despite having attractive pricing. Ask for the complete schedule in writing before you fund anything, and run your own numbers through our gold IRA fee calculator.

Minimums vary by source. Our dataset lists roughly $5,000, with a higher threshold of about $10,000 commonly attached to promotional offers. Money reported a $10,000 minimum in July 2026. Both may be accurate for different products or promotions at different times, which is exactly why you should confirm the figure that applies to you rather than trusting any review, including this one. (Verified Jul 2026.)

The cost nobody prints: dealer markup over spot

The premium a dealer adds to the live metal price is where most of the money in this business is made, and it is invisible unless you ask. A few percent over spot on standard bullion is normal. Double-digit premiums on proof or rare coins are where investors get hurt, because that premium is gone the moment you buy. Orion states that it will meet competitor pricing, which is a reasonable signal, but the only number that protects you is the quoted price expressed as a percentage over spot on the day you buy. Get it, write it down, and compare it across two providers before you commit. Our guide to gold IRA fees breaks down every line item.

Why you may see confusing search results about Orion

This is the part of the page that is worth your time, because the search results for this company are genuinely misleading and almost nobody has corrected them.

If you search for Orion alongside terms like enforcement, CFTC, or fraud, you will surface pages that mix regulatory language, competitor accusations, and low-quality affiliate content into something that reads like an official finding against this company. We went looking for the underlying documents. Here is what we found, and what we did not.

What we checked and what we found

We searched the public enforcement records of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission in July 2026. We found no CFTC or SEC enforcement action against Orion Metal Exchange or against Orion Precious Metals, Inc. We are stating that as a negative finding based on the public record we reviewed, not as a guarantee about every filing that exists anywhere, and you should verify it yourself using the links in our sources section.

The confusion appears to come from proximity rather than substance. The CFTC has brought large, well-publicised precious-metals cases against Los Angeles area dealers, and those cases are easy to conflate with any Los Angeles dealer. The biggest of them, announced in 2020 alongside 30 state regulators and involving roughly $185 million, named TMTE, Inc. doing business as Metals.com, Chase Metals, Barrick Capital, Lucas Asher and Simon Batashvili. Orion is not among the defendants. Those are different companies and different people. Reading an enforcement action against one Los Angeles dealer as an enforcement action against another is a category error, and it is one that a lot of published content about Orion makes.

What the court records actually show

The public civil litigation involving Orion runs in the opposite direction from what the search results imply. In the cases we located, Orion Precious Metals, Inc. is the plaintiff, not the defendant. In August 2021 it filed two suits in Los Angeles County Superior Court: one against Halt Gold Group, LLC doing business as Patriot Gold Group, and one against National Gold Group. The Halt Gold Group case is docketed as 21STCV30610, and its central claim is that the defendants advertised having been in business since 1986 when, Orion alleged, they had not been. The causes of action pleaded were false advertising and unfair competition under California Business and Professions Code sections 17500 and 17200, plus two interference claims.

Two things must be said clearly about that. First, a claim in a civil complaint is an allegation by one party, not a finding by a court, and Orion's allegations against those defendants remain unproven. Second, in September 2023 the court denied the defendants' motion for summary judgment on most causes of action and granted summary adjudication on one of them. A denial of summary judgment is a procedural ruling that there are genuine disputes of fact for a jury to resolve. It is not a ruling that anyone did anything wrong. We report the docket because it is public and because it corrects a factual error people are making, not because it settles anything.

What this means for you

Being a plaintiff in a competitor advertising dispute tells you very little about how a company will treat you as a customer. It is not a credential and it is not a black mark. The useful takeaway is narrower and more practical: do not let a search result substitute for a document. Before you hand any dealer money, check the BBB profile yourself, check the regulator's own enforcement database rather than a blog's summary of it, and treat any page that cannot name a case number, a docket, or an agency release as entertainment. That habit protects you from far more than one confusing brand name. Our guide to gold IRA scams and red flags covers the rest of the checklist.

Storage and custodians

Orion does not hold client IRA metals itself. Accounts are administered by third-party, IRS-approved custodians and the metal is stored in insured depositories, which is the structure a compliant precious-metals IRA is required to use. Orion works with more than one custodian and depository rather than routing everyone to a single partner, and both segregated and non-segregated storage are generally available, with segregated costing more.

Home storage is not offered, and no legitimate provider should offer it. Taking personal possession of IRA metals is treated by the IRS as a distribution, and the United States Tax Court closed the door on the so-called checkbook or home-storage structure in McNulty v. Commissioner in 2021. If any salesperson tells you otherwise, that single sentence tells you everything about the firm. See our explainers on gold IRA storage and the home storage myth.

Reputation: a split verdict worth reading carefully

Orion's third-party record is not uniform, and we think a reader deserves both halves of it.

On the positive side, as of July 2026 the Better Business Bureau lists Orion Metal Exchange with an A+ rating, accredited since 9 March 2021, with Orion Precious Metals, Inc. shown as the alternate business name. Customer review averages on the BBB profile and on Trustpilot sit in the high fours out of five, and Trustpilot's summary grade for the company was Excellent when we checked.

On the other side, Money reported in July 2026 that Orion holds "just a CCC rating from the BCA", the Business Consumer Alliance, while acknowledging its A+ from the BBB. We report that because it is a named publisher's sourced statement and because our own ranking methodology weighs BCA alongside BBB and Trustpilot rather than cherry-picking the friendliest grade. A CCC is a materially weaker grade than an A+, and the gap between two rating bodies is itself information: it usually means the two organizations weight complaint handling, company age, or responsiveness differently. It is the single biggest reason Orion's reputation pillar scores 7.9 rather than higher.

Ratings move. Check the live BBB profile and the live BCA profile yourself before you decide, and treat any figure in this review, including ours, as a July 2026 snapshot.

Buyback and service

Orion operates a buyback program and does not charge a fee to sell metals back to it, which removes one friction point at the end of the holding period. As with every dealer in this category, a buyback program is a commercial practice rather than a contractual guarantee of price, and what you actually receive depends on the spread the dealer quotes on the day. Ask what that spread has typically been, in percentage terms, before you buy rather than after.

Service is handled by an in-house IRA department, and the company positions itself on price matching rather than on education. If you already know what you want to buy, that is efficient. If you are new to the category and want to be taught before you are sold to, providers built around education, such as Augusta Precious Metals, will suit you better.

The honest cons

The lack of published pricing is the real one. A company that will not print a fee schedule is asking you to take a phone call before you can comparison shop, and that asymmetry always favors the seller. The BCA grade is the second. The shorter operating history is the third: Orion is a younger firm than several competitors, and years in business is a genuine input into whether a buyback promise will still be honoured in 2040.

Finally, a gold IRA is not right for everyone regardless of provider. Metals pay no dividend or interest, the return depends entirely on price, and fixed annual costs bite hardest on exactly the small balances Orion is best positioned to serve. For most people a sensible allocation is a slice of a diversified plan, commonly cited at 5 to 15 percent, not the plan itself. Read the pros and cons before you decide the product is right, then decide the provider.

How Orion compares

Orion ranks eighth of ten in our 2026 list. It wins clearly on entry cost and loses on transparency and reputation depth.

// FINAL VERDICT · 8.4/10

A legitimate low-minimum option with a public record that deserves correcting.

Orion earns its place on the strength of the lowest entry point we cover, a flat annual cost that holds up to roughly $500,000, and no setup or transfer fee of its own. As of July 2026 it holds an A+ from the BBB, accredited since 2021, and we found no CFTC or SEC enforcement action against it. The weaker signals are real too: a CCC from the Business Consumer Alliance as reported by Money, and no published fee schedule.

The enforcement language you may find attached to this name in search results does not belong to it. The civil cases we located show Orion as the plaintiff, and those allegations are unproven. Verify the ratings and the fee schedule yourself, then decide on the economics rather than on the noise.

Orion Metal Exchange FAQ

Is Orion Metal Exchange legit?

Orion Metal Exchange is the trading name of Orion Precious Metals, Inc., a Los Angeles based dealer that the Better Business Bureau lists with an A+ rating and accreditation since March 2021, verified Jul 2026. It uses third-party IRS-approved custodians and insured depository storage rather than holding client metals itself. We searched the public enforcement records of the CFTC and the SEC in July 2026 and found no enforcement action against Orion Metal Exchange or Orion Precious Metals, Inc. The Business Consumer Alliance grade is weaker than the BBB grade, so read both before deciding.

Has Orion Metal Exchange been sued or charged by regulators?

As of July 2026 we found no CFTC or SEC enforcement action against Orion Metal Exchange or its legal entity, Orion Precious Metals, Inc. The public civil court records we reviewed show the opposite posture: Orion Precious Metals, Inc. appears as the plaintiff, having filed suit in Los Angeles County Superior Court in August 2021 against Halt Gold Group, LLC doing business as Patriot Gold Group, and separately against National Gold Group. Allegations in a civil complaint are unproven claims by one party, not findings by a court.

What is the minimum investment for Orion Metal Exchange?

Our dataset lists Orion's gold IRA minimum at approximately $5,000, the lowest among the ten companies we rank, with a higher threshold of roughly $10,000 commonly attached to promotional offers. Money reported a $10,000 minimum in July 2026, so figures vary by source and by offer. Orion does not publish a minimum on its website, so confirm the current number directly before you plan around it. Verified Jul 2026.

What are Orion Metal Exchange fees?

Orion is commonly reported to charge no account setup fee and no transfer fee of its own, with a custodian setup charge of roughly $50 and a flat annual cost of roughly $190 covering accounts up to about $500,000. Orion does not publish a fee schedule on its website, so treat these as reported figures and ask for the full schedule in writing. Expect a separate dealer markup over the spot price on the metals themselves, which is usually the largest cost of ownership. Verified Jul 2026.

Who is Orion Metal Exchange best for?

Orion suits savers opening a smaller gold IRA, roughly $5,000 to $50,000, where a flat annual fee is a smaller share of the balance than a percentage-based charge would be. It is a weaker fit if you want a published fee schedule you can read before you call, a deep library of educational material, or the longest possible track record, since Orion is a younger firm than several competitors.
