A gold IRA transfer is the custodian-to-custodian route for money that already sits in an IRA. No check is made out to you, nothing is withheld, and the IRS sets no limit on how often you can do it. Here are the transfer rules, the forms, the timeline, and what changes when the account you are moving already holds metal.

Is it taxable? No. The IRS does not treat a trustee-to-trustee transfer as a distribution, so there is nothing to tax. The rules behind that.
Who starts it? The new custodian. You sign its transfer request and it pulls the funds from the old firm. Forms and timeline.
Already own a gold IRA? You can usually move the metal itself instead of selling it, for a fee on each side. In kind versus liquidate.
People search for this under three names, "gold IRA transfer", "IRA gold transfer" and "transfer gold IRA", and they usually mean one of two jobs. The first is funding: you hold a traditional, Roth or SEP IRA at a bank or brokerage and want part of it in physical bullion. The second is switching: you already own a gold IRA and want a different custodian, a different vault, or both. The tax mechanics are identical, the paperwork is not. If your money is in a 401(k) or another workplace plan instead, the move is a direct rollover, covered in our 401(k) to gold IRA rollover guide, and if you are still choosing between the two labels, our transfer vs rollover comparison sets them side by side.
The governing text is short. IRS Publication 590-A says that a transfer of funds in your traditional IRA from one trustee directly to another, "either at your request or at the trustee's request, isn't a rollover." It then adds a detail most dealer brochures leave out: this includes the case where the current trustee issues a check to the new trustee but hands it to you to deposit. The check is payable to the receiving custodian, not to you, so it is still a transfer. Because there is no distribution to you, the publication concludes, the transfer is tax free, and because it is not a rollover it is not touched by the one-year waiting period between rollovers.
| RULE | WHAT IT MEANS FOR A GOLD IRA | SOURCE |
|---|---|---|
| No annual limit | Consolidate three old IRAs into one metals account in the same month if you like. The once-per-12-months cap applies only to 60-day IRA-to-IRA rollovers. | Pub 590-A, "Application of one-rollover-per-year limitation" |
| No withholding | The full balance arrives. IRA payouts made to you face 10% default withholding unless you elect out; a transfer avoids the question. | IRS, Rollovers of retirement plan and IRA distributions |
| Same type in, same type out | Traditional to traditional, Roth to Roth. The IRS rollover chart allows a Roth IRA to go only to another Roth IRA. Traditional into Roth is a conversion and is taxed. | IRS Rollover Chart; Pub 590-A on conversions |
| SIMPLE IRA two-year wait | Money in a SIMPLE IRA can move to a traditional or self-directed IRA only after two years of participation. | IRS Rollover Chart |
| Usually no 1099-R | Custodians are told generally not to report an IRA-to-IRA trustee transfer on Form 1099-R, and not to report a same-type IRA transfer on Form 5498. | Instructions for Forms 1099-R and 5498 (2026) |
| Metal stays with a trustee | Bullion is only exempt from the collectibles rule while it is in the physical possession of the IRA trustee. Delivery to you is a distribution. | IRC 408(m)(3)(B); IRS IRA FAQs |
That last row matters more for gold than for any other asset. The transfer itself cannot create a tax bill, but what happens to the metal afterwards can. Our explainer on why home storage fails covers the case law, and the full list of moves that turn a clean transfer into taxable income sits on our tax free gold IRA rollover page.
The receiving custodian drives this move, not you and not the dealer. A dealer usually gets the paperwork in front of you, but the legal request comes from the self-directed IRA custodian that will hold title to the metal. Here is what that request package normally contains:
If the source is a bank IRA or a brokerage IRA, the IRA-to-gold walkthrough on our convert an IRA to gold page goes through product selection after the cash lands. What follows here is the clock.
| STAGE | TYPICAL TIMING | WHO CONTROLS IT |
|---|---|---|
| Open the self-directed IRA | Same day to 2 business days | Receiving custodian |
| Transfer request reaches the old firm | 1 to 3 business days | Receiving custodian |
| Old firm sells holdings and releases cash | 5 to 15 business days | Releasing firm |
| Cash arrives and settles | Same day by wire; add mail and clearing time for a check | Releasing firm's payment method |
| Metal purchased and delivered to the vault | Roughly 1 to 2 weeks after purchase | Dealer and depository |
These ranges are what readers report and what custodians commonly quote, not a regulatory standard. Ask both firms for their processing time in business days before you sign, and ask the old firm whether it pays by wire.
Switching custodians on an account that already holds bars and coins is still a trustee-to-trustee transfer for tax purposes, but you now have a choice the cash investor never faces: move the metal itself, or sell it and move the money.
| FACTOR | IN-KIND TRANSFER | LIQUIDATE, THEN TRANSFER CASH |
|---|---|---|
| What moves | Title to the same bars and coins | Cash from the sale |
| Dealer spread | None on the move itself | You sell at the bid now and buy at the ask later, paying the spread twice |
| Price exposure | None; you hold the same ounces throughout | Out of the market while the cash travels |
| Depository step | Re-registration to the new custodian, or insured shipment if the vault changes | None until the new purchase ships |
| Main risk | New custodian or vault refuses a product, or the move stalls between two back offices | Spread cost, and buying back at a higher price |
In kind is usually the cheaper route when the metal is ordinary bullion. It is also the honest test of what you hold: if the receiving custodian will not accept a coin because it falls outside the IRC 408(m)(3) exception, you have learned something important about the original purchase. Check holdings against our list of IRA-approved gold before you file.
Metal in an IRA is held at a depository in the custodian's name for your benefit. If both custodians use the same vault, the change can often be handled as a re-registration on the depository's books, with no truck involved. If you are also changing vaults, the metal moves by insured shipment and someone pays for it. Ask the new custodian, before you sign, whether your current depository is on its approved list and whether your storage type (segregated or commingled) carries over. Our guide to gold IRA depositories explains why that second question changes what physically comes back to you later.
A custodian switch costs money on the way out and on the way in. These are published figures from three custodians that gold dealers commonly use, all verified October 2026 from the custodians' own schedules:
| CUSTODIAN | LEAVING | ARRIVING (PRECIOUS METALS ACCOUNT) |
|---|---|---|
| Equity Trust | $125 per in-kind distribution or transfer out; $250 full termination; coin shipping at cost plus $10 ($50 minimum) | $50 setup; $125 annual maintenance; storage $160 segregated or $110 non-segregated |
| GoldStar Trust | $150 full termination; $75 partial transfer of assets or in-kind distribution; $50 wire | $50 establishment; $90 annual maintenance; $125 commingled storage; $225 minimum segregated storage |
| STRATA Trust | $100 cash transfer out (waived on its Flex tier); $250 account closure; $100 asset re-registration on transfer out | See STRATA's current schedule for its tiered annual fees |
Two clauses matter as much as the numbers. Both Equity Trust and GoldStar state that annual fees are not prorated, so leaving a month after your anniversary billing date means the year you just paid for is gone. And Equity Trust publishes more than one schedule: its general retail schedule lists $50 for in-kind transfers, while its precious-metals-only schedule lists $125, so confirm which one your account sits on. Ask the old custodian whether its termination fee and its per-transfer fee are charged together on a full exit. The broader cost picture, including what it costs to walk away entirely, is on our closing a gold IRA page, and the custodians themselves are compared on our gold IRA custodians guide.
If the check or wire is made out to the new custodian, it is a transfer. If it is made out to you, it is a distribution, and every rollover rule now applies.
Nearly every slow transfer we hear about traces to a handful of causes, and almost all of them are preventable on day one:
None of these delays has a tax consequence, because there is no 60-day clock on a transfer. That is the real advantage over taking a check yourself, and it is why the comparison on our gold IRA rollover guide treats the transfer as the default for any money already sitting in an IRA.
If a stray 1099-R does arrive in January, the form-by-form guide to gold IRA tax forms shows what a correct one should look like and how to ask the issuer for a fix.
No. IRS Publication 590-A says a transfer of funds from one IRA trustee directly to another is not a rollover, and because there is no distribution to you, the transfer is tax free. That holds whether the money buys gold, silver or anything else, as long as the receiving account is the same type as the sending one. Moving traditional money into a Roth IRA is a conversion, which is taxable even when it is done trustee to trustee.
Most IRA-to-gold transfers take two to three weeks from signed paperwork to metal in the vault, and the releasing firm sets most of that pace. Opening the new account is quick. The old custodian then needs time to sell holdings and send the cash, which is faster by wire than by mailed check. A custodian-to-custodian move of an existing gold IRA can take longer because the depository has to re-register or physically ship the metal.
There is no annual cap on trustee-to-trustee transfers. Publication 590-A states that trustee-to-trustee transfers between IRAs are not limited by the one-rollover-per-year rule. That rule only restricts 60-day IRA-to-IRA rollovers, where the money is paid to you first, and it counts all of your IRAs together.
Often yes, through an in-kind transfer, but both custodians have to agree to it. The old custodian releases title, the new one accepts the specific bars and coins, and the depository either re-registers them to the new custodian or ships them to a new vault. Each side can charge for this. For example, Equity Trust's precious-metals fee schedule lists $125 per in-kind distribution or transfer out, verified October 2026.
Usually not. The IRS instructions for Forms 1099-R and 5498 tell custodians generally not to report a trustee-to-trustee transfer from one IRA to another that involves no payment to the participant, and not to report a same-type IRA transfer on Form 5498 either. You will still get a Form 5498 showing the account's year-end value. If a 1099-R does arrive for a transfer, ask the issuer to correct it before you file.
Not as a transfer in the IRS sense. Money leaving a 401(k), 403(b) or TSP for an IRA moves as a direct rollover, which is equally tax free when the plan pays the new custodian directly and nothing is withheld. The plan, not the IRA custodian, decides whether you are eligible to take the money out yet.
